Description
In the BBC"s richly bejewelled season on the Indian subcontinent, they may have held
back the best till last. Here we have good egg Michael Wood approaching the great sweep
of Indian history as only he knows how - with twinkling enthusiasm and his distinctive
scruffy rigour. He begins hypnotically with Brahmin incantations (mantras) that are in
no known tongue and appear to date from before human speech - that"s how old Indian
civilisation is. From there he skips to Harappa, an empire to rival ancient Egypt,
wiped out by climate change in the second millennium BC. How the remnants of that world
and the world of the epic Mahabarata shaped India"s story makes for a visually seductive,
fascinating programme. Wood overflows with big ideas, but he can get down and dirty too:
there"s a lovely scene where he visits the fabulous "Alley of the Apothecaries" in
Peshawar"s bazaar to track down "soma", the ancient ritual drink of the Aryans
- and finds it"s quite a cuppa.
